Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring is an essential part of any electrical condition monitoring programme to prevent unplanned outages due to GIS failures than can cost millions in loss of income or equipment replacement cost. It provides an early warning indicator of incipient faults in GIS and crucial data for condition based maintenance on HV assets. State of the art Partial Discharge Monitoring Systems (PDMS) ensure a continuous and automated analysis by utilizing the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) measurement on up to several hundred sensors at frequencies up to some GHz. The UHF measurement detects PD activity at frequencies above common disturbances and provides a high sensitivity during online conditions.
