Applications for Partial Discharge Measurements

Power Diagnostix provides versatile partial discharge measurement instruments capable of performing a wide range of PD measurement tasks in a variety of environments. Applications supported include measurements and field tests on rotating machines, power transformers, gas insulated switchgear (GIS), instrument transformers, and power cables, among others. Long-term PD monitoring as well as standard laboratory measurements are supported.

Rotating Machines

Rotating Machine PD measurements on rotating machines help to identify problems such as slot discharges, loose wedges (bar vibrations), cracked and broken conductors, end winding surface contamination, insulation degradation, and collector ring and brush sparking, for example. To prepare for PD measurements, the rotating machine, such as turbine generator, hydro, or a large motor is brought off-line and deenergized, and coupling capacitors are installed for permanent access. Subsequently, time-based PD measurements using the ICMsystem or permanent on-line monitoring utilizing the ICMmonitor are available through connection to the installed coupling capacitors.

Power Transformer On-line partial discharge measurements on power transformers require the installation of coupling devices using the capacitive tap of the transformer bushings. The bushing couplers offer wide-band partial discharge signals as well as wide-band voltage measurements to analyze the transfer impedance. The ICMsystem equipped with the 8-channel input multiplexer and operated with the ICMmux software allows semiparallel measurements on up to eight channels to study discharge activity and cross-coupling over the windings.

Gas Insulated Switch Commissioning of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) requires either a coupling capacitor or ultra high frequency (UHF) sensors, such as those used for on-line and off-line tests during normal operation. Such UHF sensors can be provided by the GIS manufacturer or can be installed later as external ring antennas, or as field probes using inspection windows, for example.
Cable Diagnostic

Power Cable Test A huge population of service-aged distibution class cables (medium voltage range) require advanced measurement techniques to assess the risk of failure and to maintain cable system availabilty. The Power Diagnostix partial discharge detector ICMcompact with the PD cable fault location option offers convenient field testing with 0.1Hz high-voltage sources, or resonant test sets (RTS). Commissioning of extra high voltage (EHV) XLPE cables in the voltage range of 200kV and above demands timely analysis of the partial discharge activities with the cable's accessories in order to avoid early breakdown. The ICMsystem, if chained up with a fiber optic bus system along a cable line during commissioning offers such rapid access to the information required. Embedded sensors with EHV cable accessories provide the noise immunity and further offer the possibility to install permanent monitoring systems.
Quality Control

PD Test Chamber Partial Discharge testing becomes more and more important as quality control test for any kind of insulated conductive parts, like bushings, CTs, VTs, motor coils, electronic transformers, etc.. The flexible design of Power Diagnostix products enables customer specific solutions. Power Diagnostix offers all devices to automatize a high voltage test set up for series tests on small components. Different level of automatization are available.
